Kitchen cabinets often determine the tone and style of your kitchen; for this reason, cabinets usually are a big selling point with kitchen remodeling professionals and retailers. There is so much information out there that it can become overwhelming and confusing to a home improvement novice.
We’re going to clear up the confusion for you. Basically, there are only three ways to change your kitchen cabinets:
While installing entirely brand new cabinets sounds self-explanatory, the concept is often confused with cabinet replacement. Kitchen cabinet replacement involves first removing all cabinet doors and drawers, installing the new fronts, and finally staining the entire cabinet to make it appear new all over again. The replacement process does nothing to change the basic structure of your existing kitchen cabinets; it merely replaces any older parts which are showing wear and tear. Cabinet replacement is a much cheaper alternative to installing new cabinets because the process is much less invasive or time-intensive.
While cabinet replacement is cheaper than installing new cabinets, cabinet refacing is even less expensive. Kitchen cabinet refacing is, in the most basic sense, the process of adhering a laminate or wood veneer to the old cabinet door surface. This thin veneer can be made from high-quality wood; and because it’s so thin it is much more cost effective than a new replacement cabinet made of wood. Kitchen cabinet refacing uses only new veneers to cover the surface of your cabinet doors.
Whether you choose cabinet replacement or refacing, your contractor will probably offer to staining services to match your new wood to the old. They can also install new cabinet hardware such as pulls, knobs, and hinges.
There are several options available to you when remodeling your kitchen cabinets. If you are seeking the least expensive way to breathe new life into your kitchen cabinets, cabinet refacing may be the perfect solution. Kitchen cabinet refacing is not the same as cabinet replacement or new cabinet installation, but it can achieve the same look for a whole lot less money.
